Abstract

1,137,397. Electro-plating apparatus. P. HIRSCH. Nov. 23, 1965 [Nov. 25, 1964; Dec. 9, 1964], No.49815/65. Heading C7B. In an electro-plating device comprising an absorbent liquid container 9 for the electrolyte and a carrier 32 containing a current supply unit conductively connected to the absorbent liquid container, the absorbent liquid container is mounted on a storage reservoir 14 for the electrolyte, which reservoir is mounted exchangeably on said carrier, the reservoir and the carrier having co-operating contact pieces e.g. 13, for electrical connection with each other and the reservoir containing conductors 12, 6 leading from the contact piece thereof to the absorbent liquid container and the carrier is provided with a voltage regulator. In the form shown in exploded view, the current supply unit comprises a transformer 19 to which current is supplied from the mains via lead 4, a rectifier 16, a switch 18 which allows adjustment of the output voltage and a control lamp 21. One pole of the resultant D. C. voltage is connected to the absorbent liquid container 9 via anode head 38, and leads 6, 12, the other pole being connected to the workpiece to be plated by lead 2. Electroplating is effected by contacting the workpiece with the absorbent electrolyte containing element 9, whilst current is flowing. Whilst not in use the absorbent element 9 and anode head 38 &c. are covered by cap 10. Alternatively the current supply may comprise dry batteries positioned within the carrier 32, or a battery, e. g. an accumulator, positioned outside the carrier and connected thereto via terminal 29. To alter the metal which is being deposited the container 32 is released from the reservoir 14, and attached to a second reservoir containing the required different electrolyte and provided with the attached parts 7, 38 and 9, &c. The absorbent element 9 may be formed of quartz fibre fabric, glass fibre fabric, quartz wool or glass wool. The anode head may be formed of lead or antimony for deposition of chromium, from chromium-nickel alloy for deposition of gold or from the metal to be deposited for deposition of copper, nickel, brass, cadmium, tin, zinc or silver.
