Abstract

[Also in Division D1] A method of making reversible non-woven fabrics comprises interposing a fibrous interlay 13 consisting of, or containing a substantial proportion of, fibres which possess a latent crimp between two bonded fibrous webs 11 and 16 to form a composite structure, subjecting the composite structure to a needle punching operation, wherein the needles enter from one surface of the composite structure and cause fibres of the fibrous interlay to become oriented through one of the bonded fibrous webs and to project beyond the surface thereof as fibrous tufts 27,and then to a further needle-punching operation wherein the needles enter from the opposite surface of the composite structure causing fibres in the fibrous interlay to become oriented through the other bonded fibrous web and to project beyond the surface thereof as fibrous tufts 30 and then subjecting the needle punched product to a treatment which develops the crimp latent in fibres constituting the fibre tufts and present in the fibrous interlay. The term "bonded fibrous web" is applied to an assembly of relatively loosely associated fibres which has been subjected to one or treatments e.g. by needling or adhesive union to bond together the fibres. The two bonded fibrous webs may be of the same or different compositions, the exemplified webs being a needled assemblage of heterofilaments of polyhexamethylene adipamide and a copolymer hexamethylene adipamide and #- caprolactam. The interlayer may comprise hetero-filaments of polyhexamethylene adipamide and poly #-caprolactam, of polyhexamethylene adipadmide and a copolymer of hexamethylene adipamide and #-caprolactam or heterofilaments formed from at least two of the following components: polyesteramides, polyesters, polyurethanes, polyolefins, polyacrylonitriles and polyvinylidenes, the components of the hetero filaments being arranged as sheath and core or in a side-by-side relationship. In a further embodiment, the fibres may comprise edge-crimped yarns e.g. of polyhexamethylene adipamide or polyethylene terephthalate which have been heated under tension to temporarily remove the crimp. Up to 50% of the fibres in the interlay may comprise non-crimpable fibres. Crimping may be effected by the application of heat or by a suitable chemical medium.
