Abstract

1,130,259. Tapping barrels &c. WM. ARNEMANN MASCHINENFABRIK. 21 Dec., 1966 [23 Dec., 1965(2); 17 Nov., 1966], No. 57210/66. Heading B8T. A closure fixed to the wall of a barrel, &c. comprises a flexible sleeve 1, Fig. 1, with a valve 7 &c. at its end, the sleeve being rolled into the barrel, Fig. 2, when the latter is to be transported, and enclosed by a cap 23, (24), Fig. 5 (not shown). To pull out the flexible sleeve 1, the centre (24) of the cap is removed leaving its periphery 23, Fig. 2, securing the end of the flexible sleeve to a flange 10 around the hole in the barrel &c. wall. The centre (24) of the cap 23 &c. is surrounded by a line of weakness (B), Fig. 4, to facilitate its removal. By unscrewing the valve 7 &c., a hole 4 is opened to allow the efflux of liquid from the barrel &c. The inner end of the flexible sleeve 1 may alternatively be attached to the barrel &c. by a ring (15), Fig. 7 (not shown), secured by screws (16) to the barrel wall, or by an internally-threaded bush (18), Fig. 8 (not shown), screwed on to an externally-threaded sleeve (26) on the wall, or by a clamping ring (20), Fig. 9 (not shown), around the inner end of the sleeve 1 which is doubled back upon itself to surround the inner end of a spigot (22) projecting into the barrel &c. Instead of the screw valve 7 shown, the valve may have a tubular body (28), Fig. 10 (not shown), with a port (30) through its wall, rotation of the valve aligning the port with an outflow hole (29). The valve has either a wire handle (32) or a disc handle (34), Fig. 11 (not shown). The valve may alternatively be arranged with its axis perpendicular to, instead of coaxial with, the sleeve 1, Figs. 14-17 (not shown). In one form, the valve comprises a frusto-conical rotary plug (39), Fig. 14 (not shown). Various forms of the cap 23, which encloses the valve &c. when the sleeve 1 is rolled into the barrel, are illustrated in Figs. 18-25 (not shown), including one or two lines of weakness (B, C), and a tear-tab (52), to facilitate removal of the cap centre.
