Abstract

1,130,035. Crates. METAL CLOSURES (PLASTIC). 31 Dec., 1965 [8 Sept., 1965], No. 38477/65. Heading B8P. A moulded plastics crate for bottles comprises continuous upper and lower frames 1, 4 connected by support walls 5 spaced inwardly from the corners of the crate and each having an inwardly directed reinforcing rib 6, integral partition walls 2, 3 spacing the bottles. Below the partitions a cross-lattice (20, 21), Fig. 3 (not shown), supports the bottles, and includes diagonal reinforcing ribs (23, 24) at each corner. The tops 7 of the ribs 6, Fig. 4, which decrease in thickness towards the top of the crate, stop short of the crate rim, so as to act as nesting projections. To facilitate stacking one crate on top of another, projections at the corners of the top rim are engaged in holes (16), Fig. 3 (not shown), in the corners of the bottom rim 10 of a crate above. To facilitate stacking of the crate on its side upon another like crate, sloped studs 26, Fig. 4, along the upper edges of the side support walls 5 are provided. The studs 26 of one crate are engaged between the rims 11, 12 at the edges of the upper frame 1 of the adjacent crate, their ends 27 locking in recesses 28 in the rim 11 of the adjacent crate. Triangularly-shaped projections 26 on the support walls 5 at the short ends of the crate provide sloping faces which contact adjacent faces of other crates during stacking, and act as guide surfaces. Projections (25), Fig. 3 (not shown), below the lower rim 14 of the lower frame 4, act as feet supporting the crate. The projections (25) are in line with the support walls 5, so that when one crate is stacked on top of another like crate, the weight of the top crate is transferred directly on to the top of the support walls 5 of the crate below. The outer surfaces of the support walls 5 are curved at (36), Fig. 2 (not shown). The join points 19, Fig. 4, between the partition walls 2, 3, are upwardly peaked, and the lower parts of the partition walls are cut away to facilitate cleaning. The smooth outer faces of the upper and lower frames 1, 4 may carry printed matter &c. The rims 12 &c. and the support walls 5 may be used as handles.
