Abstract

1,129,950. Wax dispersion. UNION CARBIDE CORP. 30 June, 1965, No. 45168/67. Addition to 1,115,262. Heading B1V [Also in Division C3] A dispersion of natural wax or emulsifiable polyolefin wax in water is prepared by a process comprising mixing into a substantially uniformly dispersed mixture the wax, an emulsifying agent and water in a weight ratio which will form a gel in the subsequent heating step, heating the mixture under at least autogenous pressure to at least the melting temperature of the wax, blending the mixture for at least one minute under the above conditions of temperature and pressure, and cooling the resulting dispersion. The water content of the initial mix is preferably less than 75 parts by weight water to 100 parts by weight wax. The emulsifying agent may be catonic, for example the combination of an organic acid with a cyclic or polyethoxylated long-chain amine; anionic, for example an amine soap; or non-ionic, for example alkylene oxy adducts of C 8 to C 22 alcohols or alkylated (C 4 to C 22 alkyl) phenols (examples are given). After the blending step the dispersion may be diluted with water by adding the required amount of water, reapplying the above conditions of temperature and pressure, and blending again.
