Abstract

1408563 Alcohol dispersions ALLIANCE DYE & CHEMICAL CO Ltd 7 Sept 1972 [19 Aug 1971] 38899/71 Heading B1V [Also in Division D1] A thickener for use in textile printing consists exclusively of a viscous aqueous dispersion prepared by emulsifying at least one water-insoluble straight-chain alcohol having at least twelve carbon atoms in an aqueous medium in the presence of a non-proteinaceous emulsifying agent, the emulsifying agent preferably being present in proportion 5 to 20% by weight based on the alcohol. Alcohols exemplified are:-a mixture of 70% stearyl, 25% cetyl and 5% lauryl alcohols; cetyl alcohol; myristyl alcohol; cetyl/oleyl alcohol; stearyl alcohol; lauryl alcohol. The emulsifying agent may be non-ionic, cationic or anionic. The dispersion may be made by melting the alcohol and emulsifier together and pouring the molten mixture with stirring into water heated to a temperature above the melting point of the alcohol, stirring being continued until the temperature has fallen below the melting point of the alcohol. Alternatively, the alcohol and emulsifier melt may be solidified into blocks or converted into flakes, granules or powder, the dispersion being prepared by sprinkling the flakes &c into heated water as before.
