Abstract

1498786 Alkali metal dispersions JAPAN SYNTHETIC RUBBER CO Ltd 8 Oct 1976 [9 Oct 1975 7 Sept 1976] 41909/76 Heading ClA [Also in Division B1] An alkali metal dispersion is made by feeding molten metal, dispersing agent and inert liquid to a multipass emulsifier, and solidifying the metal on the resulting emulsion by (i) cooling the emulsion to at least 10‹ C. below the metal melting point while it flows non-turbulently through a tubular cooler at a linear velocity of 0À1 to 50 cm./sec., or by (2) passing the emulsion into sufficient agitated cooled inert liquid to cool the emulsion to at least 10‹ C. below the metal melting point. The liquid in (2) may be pre-formed dispersion or the dispersion medium in an externally cooled container. Alternatively, cooled liquid may be fed into a container continuously with the emulsion. The inert liquid may be a hydrocarbon, and the dispersant may be aluminium distearate or a higher fatty or sulphonic acid or ester. The particle size of the dispersed metal is usually 1-30 microns. Examples describe the preparation of(1) sodium dispersed in kerosene and (2) lithium dispersed in paraffin. A multipass emulsifier is also described.
