Abstract

1280833 Dispersion strengthened nickel alloys SHERRITT GORDON MINES Ltd 18 Aug 1969 [26 Aug 1968] 40628/68 Heading C7D A powder for forming dispersion strengthened nickel alloys may be prepared by (a) providing a nickel powder having a neon particle size below 5Á and containing from 0À5 to 40% by volume of submicron sized refractory metal oxide particles, (b) mixing the nickel powder with up to 30% by weight of at least one element or compound thereof selected from Cr, W, Mo and Co, having a particle size below 1 Á provided that only such compounds are used that will yield the metal on heating in H 2 to below the melting point of the metal (c) wet attritor grinding the mixture for a time sufficient to produce a substantially homogenous mixture (d) recovering and drying the wet mixture and (e) heating in contact with H 2 in order to reduce the oxygen in excess of that contained in the refractory oxide to below 500 p. p. n. It is preferred to use a nickel powder having a 0À2-1À0Á dye range, Cr and Cr/W as the alloying agent; a wet grinding time of 15-50 hrs and a reducing temperature of 1500-2000‹F. The preferred refractory metal oxide is thoria.
