Abstract

1,134,022. Anisodimensional tungsten carbide. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. 16 Dec., 1965 [16 Dec., 1964; 24 Nov., 1965], No. 53518/65. Heading C1A. [Also in Division C7] The invention comprises tungsten carbide particles having a maximum dimension of 0À1-50Á and a minimum dimension less than <SP>1</SP>/ 3 the maximum dimension. Preferably the particles are substantially triangular and have a maximum dimension of 0À2-20Á and a minimum dimension less than 25% of the maximum dimension. The tungsten carbide particles of the invention are prepared by mixing 0À1-40% by wt. Fe, Co, Ni or mutual alloy thereof with colloidal tungsten carbide powder at least 90% of which has a particle size of 10-60 mÁ, heating the mixture to 1300-1800‹ C. for 1-10 minutes, cooling and dissolving the metal in an acid inert to the tungsten carbide.
