Abstract

1,115,262. Polyolefin dispersions. UNION CARBIDE CORPORATION. 30 June, 1965 [1 July, 1964], No. 27625/65. Heading C3P. Chemically modified polyolefins, optionally together with rosin, shellac, casein or phenolformaldehyde resin are emulsified in water by a process comprising combining molten polyolefin, an emulsifier and water in a first blending stage, agitating the resulting mixture so as to form a water-in-polyolefin dispersion preferably having a solids content of at least 70% by weight while maintaining the mixture at a temperature above the melting temperature of the polyolefin and at a pressure sufficient to keep substantially all the water in a liquid state, transferring the water-in-polyolefin dispersion to a second blending stage, adding sufficient water to bring about a phase inversion while maintaining the temperature and pressure as above, and cooling the resultant polyolefin-inwater emulsion. The polyolefins may be homo- and co-polymers of ethylene, propylene and butene-1, copolymers of these olefins with ethylene acrylate, styrene, bicycloheptene, vinyl acetate, acrylic acid and may be modified by air oxidation or by reaction with thioglycolic acid or maleic anhydride. The emulsifier may be cationic, anionic or non-ionic and is preferably used in amounts giving a weight ratio of 0À5 to 3 emulsifier to water and at least 15 parts by weight emulsifier to 100 parts by weight polyolefin in the first blending stage.
