Abstract

1,236,948. Polytetrafluoro ethylene/polyimide compositions. DIXON CORP. 20 Sept., 1968 [22 Sept., 1967], No. 44882/68. Headings C3P and C3R. A composition comprises polytetrafluoroethylene resin (including telomers) as the continuous phase and polyimide resin as the discontinuous phase. The properties of polytetrafluoroethylene resin may be modified by blending with less than 50% by weight of total resins of polyimide resin. In particular the P.T.F.E. resin may be rendered more abrasion resistant by mixing 5 to 40 parts by weight of finely divided polyimide resin with 95 to 60 parts by weight of finely divided P.T.F.E. resin, and blending the mix to yield a substantially homogeneous mixture e.g. by suspending P.T.F.E. resin in an aqueous medium, adding polyimide resin, agitating the mixture to form a homogeneous dispersion and separating the solids from the aqueous dispersion. In theexamples the compositions contain P.T.F.E., polyimide prepared from benzophenone tetracarboxylic acid anhydride and 4,4<SP>1</SP>-oxydianiline, graphite and glass fibre.
