Abstract

1,050,489. Nitro dyes. UNILEVER Ltd. Dec. 19, 1963 [Dec. 21, 1962], No. 48481/62. Heading C4P. [Also in Division D1] The invention comprises direct nitro dyes of the formula wherein M is an alkali or alkaline-earth metal or an ammonium or substituted ammonium radical, R<SP>1</SP> is alkyl or hydroxyalkyl and R<SP>2</SP> is hydroxyalkyl, R<SP>1</SP> and R<SP>2</SP> having up to 4 carbon atoms. The dyes are made by neutralizing the free phenol wherein M is hydrogen with appropriate bases. The free phenol is made by hydroxyalkylation of isopicramic acid or of N- alkyl-isopicramic acid. The above dyes and also the free phenol are direct dyes for keratinous fibres including hair (see Division D1).
