Abstract
1,129,292. Preparation of 6-hydroxy-caproic acid. COURTAULDS Ltd. 7 Feb., 1966 [8 Feb., 1965; 29 July, 1965], Nos. 5311/65 and 32402/65. Heading C2C. 6-Hydroxycaproic acid and its derivatives of self condensation are obtained by reacting cyclohexanol with molecular oxygen to form cyclohexanol peroxide in the presence of cyclohexanone and a catalyst for promoting the reaction of cyclohexanone and cyclohexanol peroxide, whereby the cyclohexanone is oxidized to 6-hydroxycaproic acid and its derivatives, the catalyst being a carboxylic acid or an inorganic acid having a dissociation constant of at most 1 x 10<SP>-5</SP>. The organic carboxylic acid may be, e.g. aralkyl, aryl or aralkyl carboxylic acid, and the inorganic acid may be boric, germanic, telluric or titanic; a small amount, e.g. 1 to 2% by wt. of a soluble strong acid may be used as co-catalyst. The term " cyclohexanol peroxide " refers to both cyclohexanol α-hydroxy hydroperoxide and its mixtures with one or more other peroxides derived from cyclohexanol. Adipic acid is formed in the process as a by-product.
