Abstract

1,126,410. Tufting. SINGER-COBBLE Ltd. 14 Aug., 1967 [18 Aug., 1966], No. 36945/66. Heading D1G. Yarn feed means for a tufting machine comprises a plurality of drive shafts, a feed roller journalled on each shaft, the corresponding rollers of said shafts being drivingly connected one to another, and means for coupling each roller to its respective shaft, the arrangement being such that the rollers may be driven at the speed of one or other of the drive shafts. A shaft 12 comprises sections 12a interconnected by stub shafts 12b. Each stub shaft is journalled in a bearing 12c carried by a fixed bracket 15, and is formed at each end with a tongue 12e which engages a groove 12d formed in the end of the adjacent section 12a, the mating parts being held together by a split collar 12f. Yarn feed rollers 13 are journalled on each section 12a by means of respective hub portions 13b. A first clutch element 14b slidably mounted on hub 13b, is shifted into engagement with a second clutch element 14a, rigid with section 12a, upon energisation of a solenoid 14c, carried by a fixed bracket 17, for coupling roller 13 to section 12a. Roller 13 is formed with gear teeth 13c meshing with similar teeth on a corresponding roller 13 similarly mounted on a second shaft 12 rotating at a speed different from that of the first shaft 12. By selective energisation of the solenoids associated with one or the other of the shafts, the rollers may rotate at the speed of either one shaft or the other. In a modification, three similarly interconnected shafts provide a choice of three different speeds.
