Abstract

1,125,956. Cellulosic pulps; paper. FIDES TREUHAND-VEREINIGUNG. 13 Sept., 1965 [14 Sept.. 1964], No. 39005/65. Headings D2B and D2W. Paper having a low dielectric loss is obtained by treating an aqueous dispersion of finelydivided cellulose comprising at least 80% of alpha-cellulose with an aqueous solution of a water-soluble salt, oxide or hydroxide of lead, mercury, nickel, beryllium, aluminium, germanium, cadmium, tin, zinc or zirconium, washing the treated cellulose with water and converting the washed cellulose into paper the washed cellulose comprising substantially the sole cellulose constituent of the paper. The aqueous suspension may be placed in an electrolytic tank having an anode, which may be a wall of the tank of a separate anode, of one of the metals listed, and the water-soluble salt, oxide or hydroxide formed therein. The cathode may then be in a compartment separated from the reaction compartment by a cation-exchange diaphragm. The water in which the salt is dissolved, and that used to wash the treated pulp may be deionized. The pulp to be treated may be first washed with an acid to remove ashforming constituents, and in this case the watersoluble salt, oxide or hydroxide may serve to neutralize excess acid.
