Abstract
1,199,952. Electrolytic production of alkali metal hydroxides. FARBENFABRIK WOLFEN VEB. May 15, 1967, No.22348/67. Heading C7B. Solutions of alkali metal hydroxides are produced by electrolysis of aqueous solutions of alkali metal halides in a cell in which the anode and cathode are separated by a diaphragm consisting of a membrane of a dense or porous homogeneous cation exchange resin having sulpho exchange active groups, the carriers for the active groups being residues of mono-and di-vinyl aromatic compounds, the membrane consisting either entirely of a copolymer of mono- and di-vinyl aromatic compounds or of a polymeric aliphatic hydrocarbon or halogenated aliphatic hydrocarbon on to which has been graft-polymerized the mono- and di-vinyl aromatic compounds. The examples given result in the production of substantially halide free solutions of hydroxides with both dense and porous membranes. The membranes may be formed directly as foils or obtained as foils from granulates or powders on which the graft-polymerization has been effected.
