Abstract

1,273,164. Diaphragm cells. CHEMIEKOMBINAT BITTERFELD VEB. 1 Dec., 1969, No. 58531/69. Heading B5N. [Also in Division C7] An aqueous salt solution e.g. of an alkali metal chloride is electrolyzed in a diaphragm cell in which the diaphragm is a combination of two cation exchanger foils arranged next to one another; the one nearest to the anode is 0.001- 0.1 mm. thick and based on at least one polymeric fluorinated hydrocarbon, whereas the one nearest to the cathode is 0.15-0.9 mm. thick and made of fluorine-free material, e.g. polymeric (chlorinated) hydrocarbon. Bath foils, preferably supported on a web of polypropylene or after-chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, may be of the respective polymeric hydrocarbon grafted with styrene, with or without divinyl-benzene, and sulphonated; either or both foils may contain carboxylic or phosphonic acid groups instead of sulphonic acid groups.
