Abstract

A process for the electrolytic production of finely divided, stable cupric hydroxide comprises passing a direct current of electricity through an electrolyte between a copper anode and an inert cathode, said eletrolyte comprising an aqueous solution containing 80-125 grams/litre of sodium sulphate (Na2 SO4 . 10H2O) and 20-35 grams/litre of trisodium phosphate (Na3 PO4.12H2O) and having a pH above 9.0, the electrolyte being circulated between the anode and cathode by the evolution of hydrogen gas at the cathode. The temperature of the bath is preferably below 50 DEG C. The electrolyte containing cupric hydroxide may then be passed to settling tanks, from which it is pumped to a filter press wherein the cupric hydroxide is separated from the electrolyte and subsequently washed with water, e.g. until the washing water has a pH of 7.5, and dried to contain not more than 4% water. The electrolyte may also contain non-ionic surface active agents.
