Abstract

1,180,464. Electrolytic purification of liquids. SOUTH EASTERN GAS BOARD. March 2, 1967, No. 9986/67. Addition to 1, 084,196. Heading C7B. In a process for removing undesired componants such as alkali metal thiosulphates, ferrocyanides and/or thiocyanates as described in the parent Specification using a cell containing an intermediary chamber 16 separated from anode chamber 15 and cathode chamber 17 by means of an anion exchange membrane 18, and a cathion exchange membrane or simple porous membrane 19, respectively, the whole of the alkali liquor to be treated is passed into the intermediate chamber 16 of the cell, and the pH of the anode and cathode chambers, 15, 17 is controlled throughout the electrolysis by continuously or intermittently introducing acid and alkaline liquids, e. g. dilute sulphuric acid and potassium hydroxide into said chambers respectively, such that the pH values therein are maintained respectively below and in excess of 7À0 during electrolysis. The anolyte may also contain a source of free iron, e. g. scrap iron. Matter precipitated in the anolyte chamber may be maintained in suspension in the anolyte by circulation of the anolyte liquor through the circuit 44, and be removed therefrom by means of filter unit 46.
