Abstract
Pure alkali metal halides, free from OH- and CO3= ions, are produced by mixing an alkali metal compound with powdered sulphur e.g. flowers of sulphur, or powdered carbon e.g. carbon black, and introducing gaseous halogen into the mixture while heating the mixture to a temperature 125 DEG C. above the melting point of the alkali metal compound. Examples show the preparation of sodium chloride by the action of chlorine on mixtures of sodium sulphite and sodium sulphide with carbon, and sodium hydroxide, sodium sulphide, sodium hydrogen sulphide, sodium nitrate and sodium sulphate with sulphur, the preparation of potassium bromide from a mixture of potassium nitrate and carbon treated with bromine and from a mixture of KBO3 and sulphur treated with bromine, the preparation of lithium chloride from lithium carbonate and sulphur treated with chlorine, the preparation of rubidium chloride from rubidium oxalate mixed with sulphur or with carbon and treated with chlorine and the preparation of caesium bromide from caesium nitrate and sulphur treated with bromine.
