Abstract
1,137,582. Alkali metal halides. CESKOSLOVENSKA AKADEMIE VED. 10 March, 1966 [23 March, 1965], No. 10553/66. Heading C1A. Alkali metal halides are produced by replacing the anion of a starting alkali metal compound other than a halide by a halogen, or alkali metal halides are refined, in a process wherein into the melted starting material consisting of said compound or halide is fed a gaseous halide of carbon or sulphur, or a thionyl or carbonyl gaseous halide or a gaseous halide consisting of a compound of a halogen, carbon and hydrogen, at a temperature not exceeding 1250‹ C., and wherein the melt of the alkali metal halide is cooled in an atmosphere of the gaseous halide. The gaseous halide may be entrained in a stream of inert gas, e.g. argon. The alkali metal compound may be chosen from the oxides, hydroxide, salts of oxygenic acids (e.g. carbonates, sulphites, sulphates, perchlorates, nitrites) and alkali metal salts of non-oxygenic acids (e.g. sulphides). The gaseous halides exemplified are CCl 4 , SOCl 2 , C 2 Cl 6 , CHCl 3 , COBr2, COCl 2 . Examples of the preparation or purification of KCl, NaCl, LiCl. RbCl and CoCl are given.
