Abstract

897,687. Making metal powder. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Feb. 3, 1961 [Feb. 8, 1960], No. 4130/61. Class 83 (2). In a process for preparing a titanium powder, a substantially anhydrous mixture of titanium metal obtained by reducing a halide of titanium and at least 20% of alkali metal halide, the mixture being free of elementary alkali metal, is free impact milled in an inert atmosphere at a temperature below 100‹ C., preferably below 65‹ C. Preferably, the alkali metal halide is sodium chloride and the titanium halide is titanium chloride. The titanium halide is preferably reduced with metallic sodium. Preferably, the titanium particles are in a size range between 30 and 325 mesh (U.S.S.) with at least 50% below 60 mesh. Preferably, the mixture of titanium metal and alkali metal halide is crushed in an atmosphere of air having a relative humidity not greater than 40% prior to being impact milled. The milled titanium is preferably annealed in a non-contaminating atmosphere to temperatures in the range 400-800‹ C. Several examples are described.
