Abstract

A process for obtaining metallic iron and a titanium containing concentrate from titaniferous iron ores comprises mixing the ore with an alkali metal compound in amount equivalent to 2-6 per cent of alkali metal oxide, calcining the mixture under reducing conditions at 1100-1200 DEG C. to reduce the iron to metal without melting or sintering, separating excess reducing agent and ash, comminuting the remainder, and separating the iron from the titanium-containing material. The alkali metal compound may be sodium chloride, sodium carbonate, sodium hydroxide, lithium chloride, or potassium carbonate. Reducing conditions may be obtained by the admixture of carbonaceous material or by the use of a reducing atmosphere. The iron may be separated magnetically. The raw materials may be ground to pass a 20-mesh sieve and then be formed into pellets.
