Abstract
A process for reducing titaniferous iron ores comprises partially reducing the ores in the solid state at a temperature between 900 DEG C. and 1250 DEG C. to reduce at least 90 per cent of the iron oxide to iron but without reducing more than 5 per cent of the titanium dioxide, then melting the product and separating the liquid iron from the liquid titaniferous slag. The reducing agent may be coke or a reducing gas. The partially reduced material may be melted at a temperature above 1600 DEG C., preferably without intermediate cooling. The ore should be ground to pass through a 40 mesh screen and the coke, if used, should pass through 80 mesh.
