Abstract

A powdered substance containing at least one carbonate of an alkaline earth metal (including magnesium) is granulated by adding water and sodium or potassium hydroxide to the powder, granulating the powder and heating the granules for long enough to cause the hydroxide to react with the alkaline earth metal carbonate. The powdered substance preferably comprises dolomite and/or limestone, and the alkali metal hydroxide may be added in the form of a lye. The product may be, or form part of a glassmaking or ceramic composition, and may contribute the whole of the water and/or the sodium oxide required. The granules may be heated at 100-110 C.
