The invention relates to the photo-electric determination of the relative speed between a member and a reference point. The member may be a moving steel strip emerging from a rolling mill, the speed being measured relative to a fixed reference point. If the member is a road, the reference point is a moving vehicle the speed of which is to be measured. In the measurement of steel strip velocity, two single spaced lines 9, 9' are projected on to the strip 1 and the reflected light received through lenses 11, 11' by photo-cells 12, 12'. The output of cell 12 is delayed by a fixed amount and the two outputs fed to a differential circuit 14. The distance between the projected lines is adjusted until the difference signal is zero and the setting of the adjustment means 10 gives an indication of the speed. If instead of single lines, two similar patterns, spaced apart, are projected on to the strip, the photo-cell output contains a component dependent on strip velocity. If the strip is hot and lightemitting or receives general illumination, the projector 8 can be dispensed with the reflected light focused through grids or slits on to the cells 12, 12'.
