In an arrangement for determining on a ground-effect vehicle (1) its height above ground visible and modulated light after ground reflection is projected towards a bank of photo-cells (3B), the output of one (or two adjacent) of which, after frequency-selective amplification, energize respective lamp(s) (3D) adjacent a height scale (3E). The receiving system may be adjustable about its optical axis to allow adjustment of the heights at which the photo-cell responses are maximum. Pitch of the vehicle may be measured by providing two receiving systems.
