Abstract

1380045 Photo-electric position measurement TRADE & INDUSTRY SECRETARY OF STATE FOR 21 Dec 1971 [21 Dec 1970] 60481/70 Heading G1A In an apparatus for measuring the relative position of a movable and a'fixed object to which are attached a scale grating 24 and a set of index gratings 64-68 respectively, a plurality of radiation sources, one for each index grating, are pulsed mutually out-of-phase to produce out-of-phase fringe patterns, the output from a photo-cell arrangement 70-74 thereby being a modulated signal whose phase varies with the relative movement of the members. The separate fringe patterns may be focused on to a single photo-diode, Fig. 4 (not shown). Transmission gratings may be replaced by reflection ones.
