Abstract

932,481. Electric selective signalling systems. J. GUILD. May 13, 1960 [May 13, 1959], No. 16484/59. Class 40 (1). [Also in Groups XX and XXII] A measuring or control system employing two relatively movable optical gratings is characterized in that one of the gratings consists of diffusely reflective strips separated by black bars. The position of one grating with respect to the second is then determined by passing light through the transparent grating on to the reflective grating, from which it is reflected to again pass through the transparent grating, and photo-electrically counting the moire fringes so produced. This system has the advantage over systems using two transparent gratings that the reflective grating can be made of stainless steel or aluminium which is considerably less fragile than glass, especially where long gratings-for example those attached to machine tool beds-are concerned. Moreover by using metal the grating can be constructed in the form of a plastic tape. Specifications 817,051 and 932,471 are referred to.
