Abstract
1,118,879. Measuring speed photo-electrically. MARCONI CO. Ltd. July 12, 1965 [Aug. 5, 1964], No. 31913/64. Heading G1A. The invention relates to the photo-electric determination of the relative speed between a surface and a reference point. The surface may for example, be that of a moving steel strip emerging from a rolling mill, the speed being measured relative to a fixed reference point. In such a measurement, a grid pattern 3 is projected by means of a slide on to the surface of the strip 1. The light reflected back to a photocell 5 produces a noise signal containing a definite frequency component, representative of the strip speed. After amplification the signal can be measured by a frequency meter 7 or compared a local oscillator signal, the setting of which gives the speed when maximum beat frequency output is obtained. Alternatively, the projector may be dispensed with, if the strip is light emitting or receives general illumination light from the strip being focused on to an optical grid before passing to the cell. It is stated that relative speed between a fixed surface and a moving reference point may also be measured using similar apparatus.
