Abstract
1429290 Scanning a web with a rotating block; automatic control of web position J T RILEY 23 Feb 1973 [23 Nov 1971] 54265/71 Headings G2J and G3R [Also in Division G1] In a device for scanning a web 20 light from a source 1 is caused to repeatedly scan across the web at a constant angle of incidence by a rotating glass block 4 and radiation reflected off the web is directed by a solid light guide, Figs. 3 and 5 (not shown), on to a photo-cell whose output is processed by an analyzing and control circuit Figs. 8 and 9 (not shown), to detect any changes in the web's surface characteristics (i.e. the position of a reference line running parallel to and adjacent to the edge of the web) in order to provide a control signal to adjust the movement of the web (i.e. control the running of the web so that the reference line is alway passing beneath the web in the same position relative to the device). A further photocell may be provided, Figs. 4 and 8 (not shown), at the edge of the web to provide a signal indicating the beginning and ending of each scan, the signal being used by the control circuit with the scanning signal to measure the time elapsed between them and to convert this to a D.C. voltage which is used for retro-active control of the web's position. A block diagram of a suitable electronic circuit, Fig. 8 (not shown), is disclosed.
