Abstract
1406296 Investigating sheet material SAINTGOBAIN INDUSTRIES 21 Sept 1972 [24 Sept 1971] 43764/72 Heading G1A In a scanning apparatus for detecting optical irregularities in moving sheet material two slits 1, and 3 are twice as wide as the other and a lens 2, are arranged as shown so that when slit 1 is illuminated, a narrow beam of radiation impinges on the sheet material and is subsequently received by a differential photo-electrical cell 4 having two sensitive areas 5, 5a, the output signal of the differential photo-cell being a function of any displacement of the slit image (from AoBo to A<SP>1</SP> B<SP>1</SP>) due to any optical irregularities present The detector's output is fed to a recorder (35), Fig.6 (not shown) via a low pass filter, a high pass filter, a differentiator and a rectifier. A more detailed embodiment, Figs.6, 7, 8, 9, 10 and 11 (not shown), incorporating the above arrangement is disclosed. In another embodiment, Fig.4 (not shown) the slits &c. and the detector are on the same side of the sheet with a mirror on the other side so that the radiation beam passes through the sheet twice. In a modification of this, Fig.5 (not shown), without the mirror the detector is positioned to receive radiation reflected off the surface of the sheet facing the apparatus or the detector is positioned to receive radiation internally reflected off the "back" surface after radiation has entered the sheet.
