Abstract
1338611 Photo-electric fault detection BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 19 April 1971 [16 Feb 19701 7315/70 Heading G1A. [Also in Division G2] Faults in a moving sheet of glass 11 are detected by scanning a focused laser beam 14 back and forth across the sheet and detecting light scattered from the faults either visually or photoelectrically. In the photo-electric embodiment, the laser 13, focusing lens 15 and two photo-cell pairs 21/22 and 23/24 are scanned together. Detectors 22 and 24 are provided with lenses and hence pick up light scattered from smaller defects, whereas detectors 21 and 23, which may be photomultipliers, respond to scattered light and interference fringes resulting from larger defects. Two arrays 19, 20 of stationary photo-cells define between them a passage for unscattered light, and hence also respond to any scattered light. For visual observation, Fig. 1, (not shown), the sheet of glass is passed between a pair of screens (2, 3) each having a slit (4, 5) through which the scanning beam passes. Light scattered from defects produces patterns on these screens, different types of defect producing different types of pattern.
