Abstract

1362320 Photo-electrically detecting holes in webs H LIPPKE 17 Nov 1972 [18 Nov 1971] 53142/72 Heading G1A Holes in a web of material, e.g. paper, are detected by photo-electric apparatus comprising a substantially linear elongate light source (which may comprise a plurality of aligned sources), on one side of the material, and, on the other side, two rows of detectors, the axes of the rows and the light source being parallel and situated at an angle, e.g. at right angles, to the direction of movement of the web. The photo-detectors are connected in pairs, one detector from each row, such that an indicator device responds to the difference in the outputs of the detectors of each pair. By using elongated filament lamps having clear glass envelopes, the lamps and detectors may be spaced relatively far apart on either side of the web, and the holes in the web act as pinhole apertures to form an image 12 Fig. 2 of the filament in the plane of the detectors. Since such an image is incident on only one row of detectors at a time, a different output is obtained from detectors 11 than from detectors 12, Fig. 2, so that the difference signal as sensed by a differential amplifier, Fig. 4 (not shown) provides a fault output signal. The differential arrangements of photo-cells prevent ambient light variations affecting measurements, The apparatus may be shielded from external light.
