Abstract

1329240 Measuring thicknesses BRITISH AIRCRAFT CORP Ltd 4 Nov 1970 [11 Nov 1969] 55108/69 Heading G2J [Also in Division G1] The thickness t of a translucent article is measured by projecting light from a laser 1 through an orifice 2 and lens 4 at an angle α to the front surface 6 of the article so that the light is reflected from points P and Q on the front and rear faces 6, 7 of the article at angle # from the front surface on to a lens 8 at a distance u from the surface so that the lens focusses the light as two distinct images 9, 10 spaced apart a distance d on to a screen 11 spaced a distance v from the lens and using these measurements to calculate the thickness of the article according to the formula:- where # is the angle between two planes which intersect along the line N normal to the front surface at the point of impingement of the beam, which planes respectively contain the axis of the light beam and the optical axis of the lens and Á is the refractive index of the material of the article.
