Abstract

A two-stage annealing process for avoiding ribbing and roping in cold-rolled ferrilic stainless steel strip containing 14-20% Cr comprises box-annealing the strip e.g. in coiled form first at 750-970 DEG C. for up to 10 hours then at 700-850 DEG C. for up to 40 hours without intermediate air cooling, the first annealing temperature perferably being not more than 50 DEG C. below nor 50 DEG C. above the ferrite-austenite transformation point. A specified steel composition is 0.05%C, 0.44% Si, 0.28% Mn, 0.021% P, 0.01% S, 17.4% Cr, 0.2% Ni, 0.08% Mo, 0.0362% N, balance Fe. The annealed strip may be air cooled and further cold-rolled and annealed e.g. at 850 DEG C. and pickled.
