Abstract
The properties of wood pulp are improved by contacting the wet pulp with a gas containing sulphur dioxide in a concentration of less than 5%. The pulp may be dried by contact with this gas or subsequently. The gas may be heated or at superatmospheric pressure. It may contact the pulp initially at a temperature between 300 DEG and 550 DEG C and finally at a temperature between 90 DEG and 120 DEG C under a degree of turbulence enough to prevent charring. The gas may be predominantly air, or may be substantially free from oxygen. In the Examples, the pulp treated is a sulphate kraft pulp.
