Abstract

Acyclic olefins are disproportionated in the presence of Re2O7 on SnO2, ThO2 or ZrO2. Typical reaction conditions are - 20 DEG to 500 DEG C., 0 to 200 p.s.i.g. G.H.S.V. 500 to 5000 v./v. Olefins mentioned are C3- 30 alkenes; specified olefins range from propylene up to octenes. An example describes the disproportionation of propylene to ethylene and butene-2.ALSO:Disproportionation catalysts are made by dissolving in water a soluble compound of an element of Group IV of the Periodic Table, which element forms a refractory oxide, precipitating the hydroxide on the oxide of the element from aqueous solution, converting the hydroxide to the oxide if necessary, isolating the oxide, passing a stream of carrier gas over the oxide and heating Re2O7 on a precursor therefor in the stream of carrier gas upstream of the Group IV oxide whereby Re2O7 is deposited thereon. Specified oxides are ZrO2, ThO2 and SuO2. Only the use of the latter is exemplified. The catalyst may be activated by heating in air or an inert gas.
