Abstract
A process for the production of higher ketones, viz methylisobutylketone, diisobutylketone, mesityl oxide and dihydroisophorone, comprises contacting a mixture of hydrogen and acetone in the vapour phase and at an elevated temperature with a catalyst comprising an aldolization/dehydration catalyst and a palladium catalyst. The two catalysts may be present as a mixed catalyst or in separate beds, the palladium catalyst being second. Suitable aldolization/dehydration catalysts include zinc oxide, alumina, titania, zirconia, thoria, and oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, borates, phosphates and silicates of alkali and alkaline earth metals (including magnesium), or mixtures thereof. Promoters such as chromic oxide and bismuth trioxide may be present. A carrier may be used. The palladium is preferably supported on a carrier such as carbon or silica, or the aldolization/dehydration catalyst where this is in a suitable physical form. Temperatures of 140-500 DEG C. are mentioned. Excess hydrogen is preferably used.ALSO:Catalysts for the production of higher ketones from acetone and hydrogen consist of: Example 6, palladium and a mixture of ground calcined magnesite and a microspheroidal silica and, Example 10, palladium and ground calcined magnesite, silica and bismuth trioxide, pelleted in each example.
