Abstract
One or more olefinically unsaturated compounds, e.g. propylene and isobutylene, or mixtures of these are oxidized in the vapour phase to acrolein or methacrolein or the corresponding unsaturated acids by reacting the olefins with oxygen or oxygen-containing gas at a temperature of 300-450 DEG C. in the presence of a catalyst (see Division B1) which comprises bismuth molybdate with a Bi:Mo atomic ratio of from 1:24 to 3:1 and a formula BiaPbMocOd, where a is 0.5 to 36, b is 0 to 5, c is 12, and d is 36 to 76 when the other elements are in their fully oxidized state and the amount of oxygen will be reduced correspondingly if the elements are in the lower valency state, and copper in metallic or combined form in an amount of from 0.01 to 10.0% by weight based on the bismuth molybdate and calculated as metallic copper. The molar ratio of olefin to oxygen may be 4:1 to 25:1, and a contact time of 0.1 to 5 seconds may be used.ALSO:An oxidation catalyst comprises bismouth molybdate with the formula BiaPbMocOd where a is 0.5 to 36, b is 0 to 5, c is 12, and d is 36 to 76 when the other elements are in their fully oxidised state or less when the other elements are in a lower valency state, and copper in metallic or combined form in an amount from 0.01 to 10.0% by weight based on the bismuth molybdate and calculated as metallic copper. To prepare the catalyst, the copper may be deposited onto the bismouth molybdate as a copper mirror by reduction of copper acetate with aqueous ammonium hydroxide and hydrozine hydrate, or bismuth molybdate may be impregnated with copper nitrate and calcined, or metallic copper powder may be mixed with bismuth molybdate, or acidic solutions containing copper and bismuth nitrates may be mixed with an aqueous molybdic acid/ammonium hydroxide solution, and the precipitate formed calcined. The catalyst may be supported on silica gel, silicates, fuller's earth, pumice, kieselguhr, clays, mica, zeolites and porcelain, alumina, bauxite, thoria, beryllia, magnesia, magnesite, cerium oxide, titanium oxide, silicon carbide, zirconia, asbestos and graphite.
