Abstract
Sintered Mo, W or Cr containing 0.04-0.8% by weight of carbon and having an average grain size of not more than 0.025 mm. is formed by sintering a mixture of the powdered metal and sufficient of an organic film forming non-volatile polymer binder which decomposes on sintering to give the required carbon content. The mixture contains 1.5 to 10% of organic binder which may be in the form of a solution and the slurry or paste may be shaped by rolling, pressing, extruding, or knife coating. The green shapes e.g. sheets may be joined together with a binder, pre-sintered and finally sintered in hydrogen or in hydrogen followed by a vacuum sintering or by vacuum sintering alone. The binders which may be used are methyl or ethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol, cellulose acetate, phenol-formaldehyde resins, urea aldehyde resins, polyimides &c. Plasticisers and organic solvents are also specified.
