Abstract

A process for reducing the mercury losses occurring in the electrolysis of an aqueous alkali metal chloride solution using a mercury cathode comprises precipitation of the mercury occurring in the dilute alkali metal chloride solution which leaves the cell after electrolysis; the precipitation being effected after dechlorination of said dilute solution by the addition of sulphurcontaining compounds, e.g. Na2S with or without FeCl2, or organic or inorganic reducing agents, e.g. metals, aldehydes or carboxylic acids, and the precipitate being removed from the solution by centrifuging, decantering or filtering. The dilute solution is then resaturated and, after purification, returned to the electrolysis cells.
