Abstract

1,121,246. Lighting fittings GENERAL ELECTRIC CO. 1 Feb., 1967 [25 Feb., 1966], No. 4792/67. Heading F4R. A luminaire having a sealed optical system consisting of a reflector and a transparent closure sealed thereto has an air filter arranged to remove solid or gaseous impurities, inserted into the system, heat from a lamp inside the system causing expulsion of air while it is in operation, cool air being drawn into the interior through the filter when the lamp is not operating. In the form shown for use as a street lamp, a reflector 2 is enclosed in a housing 1, the mouth of the reflector being closed by a globe or refractor with the interposition of a sealing gasket. A cup-shaped housing is mounted in an opening in the reflector and carries a holder 11 for the lamp 12, a sealing gasket being provided around the junction of the housing and reflector. A filter 15 consisting of a tube of resilient material in which is a mass of, for example, activated charcoal is mounted in the side of the housing. In a modification, the luminaire consists of a reflector closed at the bottom by a window and secured at the top to a housing having a series of openings behind which is an annular window. The housing is secured to a supporting member containing the control gear for the lamp. The filter is mounted in an aperture in the reflector.
