Abstract

In a gas-fired space heater a heat exchanger 9 is enclosed in a casing 12 through which room air to be heated is forced by a fan 13. Air for combustion is provided by an electrically driven blower 11. An external control device (e.g. room thermostat or manual temperature setting control, not shown) acts on a switch 14 which when opened connects resistors 15 and 16 in series with the fan motor 13 and thus reduces the fan speed, conversely when the switch 14 closes, the resistors are out out of the circuit and the fan motor speed is increased. A thermostat phial 17 senses temperature changes in the air emerging from the heater and acts on valve 7 to regulate the gas supply to the main burner 8 accordingly. When, e.g., the fan speeds up, the temperature of the room air emerging from the exchanger 9 falls, the phial 17 acts on the valve 7 to increase the gas supply. When switch 14 is open the resistor 16 acts as an accelerator, current through resistor 16 assisting the room air to heat up the phial 17, thereby speeding up the response of valve 7 in controlling the gas supply to the main burner 8.
