Abstract

1,120,155. Centrifugal-casting machines. UNITED STATES PIPE & FOUNDRY CO. 7 Feb., 1967 [7 Feb., 1966], No. 5889/67. Heading B3F. A mould 5 rotating in a water box 1 initially surrounds a pouring trough 8 (with spout 9) as shown and is moved with the box 1 by a cylinder 10, along rails 3, from off the trough as the metal is poured, the mould being progressively lined, just ahead of the advancing metal, with a wet coating of refractory and binder from a fan spray 23 fixed with respect to the pouring trough 8. Before pouring from a tilting ladle 11, a bell end of the mould 5 is coated, after removal of a previous cast pipe, by a nozzle 26 (shown swung out of operative position); a core 15 is then inserted in the coated bell of the spinning mould by an arm 12 operated by a cylinder 18 and shaft 13. After spinning, the core-setting mechanism is withdrawn and the expanding head of a pipe extractor (29), Fig. 2 (not shown), is inserted to grip the cast pipe as the mould 5 and water box 1 are moved back over the pouring trough 8 and off the pipe to allow the bell coating to be applied ready for the next casting. Various positions of the coating nozzle 23 are described, Figs. 4-7 (not shown).
