Abstract

<PICT:0789916/III/1> <PICT:0789916/III/2> <PICT:0789916/III/3> In a method of centrifugally casting tubes in a horizontal metal mould, molten metal is poured non-retractively into one end of the mould while the mould is rotating to distribute the metal uniformly about its internal surface, the rotation is stopped when the metal has solidified, and the mould is then moved longitudinally toward the end opposite the pouring end while the casting is kept stationary so as to remove it from the mould. The pipe mould 15, cooled by spray jets 28, is supported on adjustably mounted rollers 16 on a carriage 12 reciprocable on rails 11 by means of a cylinder 69. The melt is poured at the bell end of the mould through the core 43 from a ladle 42 through a spout 44. The ladle is tilted by an hydraulic cylinder 47. The spigot end of the mould is closable by a ring moved into and out of closing position by means of a cylinder 38, the piston rod 34 of which carries a lever 36 supporting the ring. At the end of the machine bed 10 opposite the pouring end, is mounted a fixed support 51 carrying a combined push-out rod 55 and mould coating spray 60. The spray tube 60 is attached at one end to a piston-rod operated by a cylinder 63 so that it may be withdrawn into the tube 55, Fig. 3, when a casting is being pushed from the mould by movement of the mould carriage towards the support 51, or moved to a position with the spray nozzles exposed for spraying the interior of the mould as the carriage moves towards the pourer. Instead of pushing out the casting, it may be held at the bell-end while the mould moves.
