Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 9, 1921 To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. Monsr, a citizen of the United States, residingat Roland Park, in the county of Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented a new and useful Method and Means for Billet- C'asting, of which the following is a speclfication.
My invention relates to billet casting. The object is to provide improved method and means for casting hollow billets. vention comprises improvements 1n the 1nvention described in my copendlng appllcation filed June 8th, 1920, Serial No. 387,348.
The invention comprises a mold and a cooperating tapered core, and means for causing a relative movement between the mold and the core during the operation of pouring into the mold.
In the example shown the core is held stationary and the mold is moved upwardly, in the direction of the taper of the core, during the pouring operatlon. The movement of the mold and the operation of pouring may be so timed and related, that the top of the mold shall pass the top of the core before the completion of the pouring operation.
Referring to the drawings, which illustrate merely by way of example suitable means for effecting my invention 2-- Figure 1 is a view, in part elevation and part vertical section, of means for effecting m invention.

The mold element 6 is shown mounted in the trunnion member 7', having trunnions 7 adapted to be supported by the bracket 8, connected with the mold table or platform 9, mounted on the hydraulic plunger 10 operating in cylinder 11.
The core element 12 is provided with the extension 13 secured in the portion 14 of the stationary framework, so that said core eleline The inment 12 is supported on the stationary base or portion 14 and held in position by the pm 15 or other suitable means. This core is shown as tapering upwardly.
At the upper end of mold member 6 is removably mounted the pouring funnel 16. At
the lower end of mold element 6 is provided the print or removable block 17 secured in posltion by the bolt 18. This block 17 is adapted to fit snugly around the base or iarger end of core 12 when in initial posi- In operation the caster may stand upon the table or platform 9, while pouring into funnel 16. This table or platform 9, also provides a convenient supporting means for the. ladle or other suitable pouring dev1ce, not shown, so that said supporting means shall move with the moving mold. As the pouring begins, pressure is admitted to the hydraulic cylinder 11 to move the plunger 10 upwardly, which carries platform 9 and the mold 6 upwardly relatively to the core 12.
As stated in my said copending application, the molten metal coming in contact with the cooler walls of core 12 becomes sufliciently set as to its inner skin or wall to hold the metal as the mold moves upwardly into regions where the cross sectional dimension of the core is reduced.
If so desired, the relative movement between the plunger 10 and mold 6 may be so timed, with respect to the pouring operation, as to bring the top of the core 12 into the position shown in Fig. 2, at approximately the point of completion of the pouring operation, so that the metal will cover the end of core 12 and leave the casting closed at its top, as shown in Fig. 3. This form of casting being desirable for cupping purposes.
It will be understood that the specific de vice, as illustrated'in the drawings and described in this specification, is only given as an example, and that other forms of apparatus may be used for effecting my invention, as defined in the following claims.
What I claim is 1. The method of casting hollow billets,
- core element to cause the withdrawal of the core from the mold during the pouring operation.
2. The method of casting hollow billets, which consists in introducing the molten metal into the space formed between a mold element and a separable tapered core element and moving the mold element relatively to the core element to cause withdrawal'of the core from the mold during the pouring operation, the degree of taper of the core element and the speed of the movement of the mold element being relative to the degree of contraction of the metal of the casting in the process of cooling.
3. The combination of a mold element, a cooperating core element, and means for moving the mold element relatively to the core element to cause the withdrawal of the core from the mold during the pouring operation.
4. The combination of a mold element, a cooperating core element, means for moving the mold element relatively to the core element, during the pouring operation, and a platform forming a part of the mold support and moving with the mold element.
5. The combination of a mold element, a cooperating core element, means for moving the mold element relatively to the core element, during the pouring operation, and a supporting platform for carrying the operator moving with the moving mold element.
6. The combination of a mold element, a cooperating core element, means for moving the mold'element relatively to the core ele ment, during the pouring operation, and a platform adapted to move with the mold element.
7. The combination of a mold element, a cooperating core element, and means for moving the mold element relatively to the core element, simultaneously with the pouring operation, said means comprising a cylinder for a pressure medium and a plunger operating therein.
