Abstract
1,145,860. Tundishes. E. W. BLISS CO. 4 Aug., 1966 [25 Aug., 1965], No. 34937/66. Heading F4B. [Also in Division B3] In a continuous casting machine a mould 12 is fed with molten metal successively from a pair of ladles 11, 11<SP>1</SP> and tundishes 24, 24<SP>1</SP> which are movable in tandem along rails 17 so that nozzles 46, 46<SP>1</SP> can be positioned either in a discharge position over the mould 12 or in an idle position where an empty ladle can be filled and/or repairs carried out to the tundishes and nozzles. Refractory troughs 70 are arranged extending outwards from opposite sides of the mould in line with the line of movement of the tundishes 24, 24<SP>1</SP> so that before a pouring ladle becomes empty the next ladle in the idle position can start to pour and one of the troughs feed the molten metal to the mould. The ladles are then moved so that the full one moves to the discharge position, and the molten metal still pouring from the emptying ladle in the idle position is directed to the mould 12 by the oppositely placed trough 70. The troughs 70, 70<SP>1</SP> are tiltable about pivots 55, 55<SP>1</SP> by cylinders 56, 56<SP>1</SP> so that molten metal or slag may be directed to the mould or slag pots 50, 50<SP>1</SP> respectively. The troughs 70, 70<SP>1</SP> are also slidable longitudinally by cylinders 75 and one trough is slidable to interrupt the feeding of molten metal into the mould 12 and direct it into the slag pot 50<SP>1</SP> (Fig. 7, not shown). Gas jets 82<SP>1</SP> are provided above the troughs to heat the molten metal and to provide a reducing blanket of gas therefor. Semicircular cut-outs are provided at the end of each trough to form a pouring opening 90 when said ends are held together.
