Abstract

Articles formed wholly or partly from keratinic fibres, e.g wool, are felted by impregnating them with an aqueous liquid and then subjecting them to a mechanical treatment in a bath comprising a hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon and water until the desired degree of felting is obtained, the mechanical treatment comprising repeatedly immersing the articles in the treatment bath. The aqueous liquid may be water or an aqueous solution of an alkaline substance, e.g. a fatty amine or an alkali metal polyphosphate or silicate, or a leaching composition made from a substance having an alkaline reaction, the solution preferably having a pH of 9-11 and optionally containing a lubricating and/or softening agent, e.g. a long chain aliphatic or polyoxyethylenic cationic agent such as a polyoxyethylenic dialkyl ammonium chloride. The articles may be dipped in the aqueous liquid at ambient temperature and excess liquid removed by spin drying so that at least 50% by weight of the liquid based on the dry articles is retained. The treatment of the articles with the hydrocarbon or halogenated hydrocarbon, e.g. perchlorethylene or trichlorethylene, and water may be effected in a bath in which is rotatably mounted a perforated drum, at 20-70 DEG C for from 30 minutes to 2 hours. The treating composition may contain water in a quantity approximately the same as that present in the impregnated articles, an anionic, nonionic or cationic emulsifier and a lubricating or softening agent, e.g. a polyoxyethylenic fatty alcohol or polyoxyethylenic dialkyl ammonium chloride. The treatment may be combined with a water proofing, bleaching, oil proofing, mothproofing, antistatic or bactericidal treatment. Knitted woollen berets or slightly pre-felted rabbit's wool hat shapes may be treated.
