Abstract

A method of producing a bactericidal finish on textiles consisting wholly or partly of natural or regenerated cellulose, which finish is resistant to laundering with detergent solutions containing metal sequestering agents, comprises treating the textiles with a polybasic acid in which one H ion has a substantially higher dissociation constant than the other or others, or with a derivative of such an acid, or with a halogenated mono- or poly-basic organic acid, to fix on the cellulose sufficient acid groups to provide at least 2 H ions per 100 anhydro-glucose residues, and then treating with a salt of a metal having bactericidal properties in such a way that the metal is combined with the acid groups directly and not precipitated as an insoluble compound in the cellulose. The cellulosic material may be in the form of loose fibre, yarn, or woven, knitted, or non-woven fabric. Specified bactericidal metals are Ag, Cu, Hg, Pb, Be, Sb and Cd.
